Sailing in Tasmania - A Tradition of Excellence

Since 1837, Tamar Yacht Club has provided members with the best competition, social, on-water and sailing clubhouse facilities in Northern Tasmania. As the oldest yacht club in the Southern Hemisphere, members enjoy the benefits of the resources and advantages that only a long established club can provide.

People have many reasons for joining the Tamar Yacht Club. Keen sailors and power boaters mix with those who join for the social aspects of the clubs and the chance to make new friends. Experienced sailors have the opportunity to skipper or crew, from dinghies to ocean racers. Novices have opportunities to learn, and gain recognised qualifications on all sizes of boats. Friends, supporters and retired sailors can enjoy the great social atmosphere at either our Launceston or Beauty Point Clubhouses.

You do not need to own a boat, or even have sailed previously.

Members have access to club facilities such as:

As a member, you are encouraged to invite friends and family to either of the club sites.

How to Join:

There is a type of membership to suit everyone, whether you are a  junior/beginner, social, family, active sailor or powerboat owner. Please see the application forms below for our current membership fees.

 Families

  • The Tamar Yacht Club has a large fleet of club owned training boats, including Optimist, Sabot, Flying 11's and Pacer class dinghies.

When joining as a family, you have the added benefit of a discounted family membership with the club and interacting with our sailing families.

The Tamar Yacht Club's Small Boat Sailing Squadron conducts a full sailing program and training sessions in a safe, supportive and friendly environment. These sessions are conducted by qualified instructors and overseen by the clubs fleet of race management and rescue boats.

Sailing is that rare sport that brings people together and has a role for everyone, regardless of their age. You can truly sail for life.

The Tamar Yacht Club operates a full sailing calendar, with around two hundred individual race starts each year, from junior beginner's dinghy races to offshore events and Australian Championship Events.

Learning to Sail

  • There are regular sail training sessions, power boat training, navigation, and marine radio operator certificate courses. You will have the opportunity to crew on all sizes of yachts, assist race officials and absorb the boating knowledge that the experienced members possess.

Getting Involved

  • In the sailing season we need rescue and committee boat skippers and crew, as well as assistance in the canteen, bar and at our major events i.e. Neil Buckby Subaru Tamar Valley Multi Sport Classic, Sargissons & Natuzzi Launceston 2 Hobart start and Melbourne 2 Launceston finish.

The social committee is always looking for fresh faces bringing new ideas.

Someone is needed to help with articles for our newsletters and website. We would love to know what you are doing - whether it is cruising the Tamar or the Caribbean or racing at any location between Beauty Point and Britain.

We are also interested in land-based activities - we have heard rumors of skiing rendezvous and car rallys. You do not have to write much and good photos are always appreciated. Copy and images can be emailed or put onto disk and left with the office. Video too! If you have shot any "on water" video that might be suitable for the website please get in touch. We can help with editing if needed.
